The site App-reciation Reviews just posted a very nice review of SpongeDude and the Alien Hippies. The only thing they suggested was to add some more tips and hints to help players with the more complex levels. So please, if you played SpogneDude, give us some feedback which levels were exceptional hard and need more hints - we will consider this for the next update.

Vieda www.vieda.de is the German society for iPhone developers which was initiated by Holger Frank (developer of MobileButler and organisator of appsforsale) and Hanno Welsch (developer of iDay and iBody). It was founded 1st of November and consists of 27 developers. Vieda aims to create a plattform which pushes German apps and to bring developers together.

We joined Videa on 12th of November. We are curious to see how Vieda is going to develop...

Sponge Dude is an addictive Action&Puzzle-Game featuring a unique physic-based Interface. Pilot the alien sponge head and his hippie friend through 26 challenging levels and adventures.

- STORY
Sponge Dude has been banned to earth by his tyrannic boss iBoss as a disciplinary measure for messing up his job as planet's watchman. Taken for granted he wants to leave this underdeveloped planet as soon

I took some of the great ideas produced by our friends at mainfeld and more or less finished the graphics style for the first world. See the screenshot that will give you an impression. The first world will be an outdoor one in which Sponge has to find out what happened and how the game is working.

Some other cool background songs will be provided by a studio project of Michael Ochs. The sounds will be available in two other worlds in which our hero is going to pass.One track again is avocal song for which Isabel spontaneously joined the studio jam project and did a first take with some nice vocal lines. We finally did it: during lunch at our favorite indian place we had an unexpected creative seizure and finally came up with a name for our game: "Sponge Dude ... and the Alien Hippies". We also came up with "Sponge Dude - Wet, Smelly and Alone on Earth" - which unfortunately just made second place. As you see the on the picture the Sponge Dude also likes it!

We got another fine soundtrack from Jörgs former band Kokoon. Check out their site on myspace where you will also get some sample tracks.

Nice progressive alternative rock with an astonishing female voice. This will perfectly fit the "industrial" levels of the game. A big "thank you" goes out to Kokoon!!!

Working on graphics

At the moment we are working a lot on the graphic parts of the game. Starting from really basic ideas - we planned to only make very basic graphics - the development went into a more rich look of the game.

A bit disappointed from the initial ideas we did a full rework of the graphic stuff and are right now working on a more unique graphics style. The style will be more fluent with a lot of curves and swinging elements. Also the coloring was renewed - from a darker to a brighter impression.

For all you engineers out there - a quick look behind the technical-curtain: Over the last months we implemented a simple but quite nice tool-chain to define our worlds. We started out with a self-define XML-language but realised soon that this approach would need to much time. We then decided to define the entire levels in SVG using Inkscape - with only a few custom SVG-tags and -attributes. The core of our game-engine basically parses the SVG, the physic objects are solved using the really great Box2D physics engine, and everything is then thrown onto the iPhones screen using OpenGL-ES. I am not sure if it finally took more or less time than we expected to implement the SVG-based-rendering system - but it was quite comfortable to have a fully specified vector graphics language plus a really powerfull vector graphics editor as a base to start on.

The picture shows a working copy of one of my favorties: the hippie sky ship level - no graphics yet, only physics. Jörg will show his work on graphics in one of the following posts...

If you didn't understand a single word - lean back and relax - you won't need anything of this to enjoy the game.

It all started on a one week winter hacking trip to Björns summer residence on Mallorca playing around with the iPhone, OpenGL-ES and the cool physics engine Box2D ... which evolved into ambitious game project. It is summer now and the game engine is almost finished - all we need is levels, levels, evels. We are still looking for a name for this green dude ... if you have any ideas ... get inspiredby the attached picture (no - we can't use Flubber or Sponge Bob!).
